Voter turnout for the March 5 election in Santa Cruz County appeared lower than turnout in recent primary elections, said Santa Cruz County Clerk Tricia Webber.

• Webber estimated that 30% of registered voters in Santa Cruz County participated in Tuesday’s election. As of about 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, voter turnout was 27.58%. Many ballots remain to be processed. 
• About 47% of registered voters in Santa Cruz County participated in the June 2022 primary election.
• About 64% of registered voters in Santa Cruz County participated in the March 2020 primary election.

“Primaries tend to be lower in turnout than general (elections). I don’t feel that this primary’s going to be any different,” Webber said Tuesday night. 

There are about 169,000 registered voters in Santa Cruz County. About 4,000 people voted in person Tuesday and many more submitted ballots at drop boxes or by mail, Webber said.
