LIVE OAK >> A proposal for 100 townhomes at 5940 Soquel Ave. is set to go to the Santa Cruz County Planning Commission Wednesday, Dec. 10.
Developer KB Home submitted an application for the 5-acre site in January 2025. The development would include:
- 17 buildings with 100 units total.
- 15 homes priced below market rate.
- 200 parking spaces for residents, plus 15 for visitors.
If the planning commission approves the application, the Board of Supervisors will be required to approve the developer’s environmental review for the project to move forward.
Separately, two Live Oak temporary housing projects for homeless people are set to open within the coming months. A 20-bed facility, Live Oak Landing, is set to open this month in the former Santa Cruz Inn at 2950 Soquel Drive. A 32-bed navigation center, Bridge Housing, is in construction at 2022 Soquel Ave., and expected to open in early 2026.
Both facilities are set to offer temporary housing for homeless people with mental health issues and prioritize those involved in CARE courts, which offer voluntary treatment for those with schizophrenia and similar conditions. Nonprofit Housing Matters is contracted to offer on-site case work, mental health care and other support.
