The proposed project would replace three single-family homes near Mission and Dufour streets in Santa Cruz.

Project description

  • A preliminary application for a six-story building was submitted in July 2024 and a full application had not been submitted as of November 2024. A previous application with a three-story building was submitted in 2023.
  • Total units: 68. It includes studios, “doubles” and two-bedroom apartments.
  • Height: Six stories, 71 feet tall.
  • Details: The ground floor would include space for shops, eateries or offices along with 14 parking spaces for visitors and residents.

Status

  • Santa Cruz city staff published answers to frequently asked questions about the proposal on Nov. 4, 2024. It addresses fences, emergency response, parking and other project details.  
  • At an online meeting Sept. 30, a representative of the project’s architect Workbench and city planners fielded residents’ questions and concerns. Some concerns included traffic, parking, aesthetic, height and the affordability of the proposed housing.

Developer

Mission Studios Santa Cruz LLC owns the property. It is affiliated with Oakland-based Getgo Property Group.

In 2023 a three-story apartment building was approved by city staff. The developer later decided that plan wasn’t financially viable, said a representative of Workbench, a Santa Cruz-based company that was hired to design the six-story propsal. (Peter Spellman Design Inc.)
